Rough Planning Abstract Outline

With the worries of global warming and pollution increasing becoming more apparent each day we look for new ways to analyze this threat. Canadian communities face numerous sustainability-related challenges, from rising energy and housing costs, traffic concerns, and climate change, to long-term water supply challenges. Taking a different approach to problems, drastic change is possible. The place to start the look is where we live. More than 90 percent of Canadians live in cities and more are moving every year. The challenge is to see that through planning is it possible in the most suitable solution to transform a block of Vancouver into a sustainable community.

Initial research has determined that there are two methods of planning that will be focused on in this report: Six Principles of Sustainability and The Natural Step. The Natural Step is angled to that of promoting real change towards a sustainable world. This is done provides a clear, definition of sustainability and a strategic planning framework to help communities make smart decisions that will move them step-by-step towards a successful and sustainable future. The six principals of sustainability majors on the six points which are Capitalize on the site, Connect the flows, Layer the systems, Create a centre, Economy of means and Make it home. I have determined specific items for each that addressee the needs and sustainability of the community. This will create a design that will appraise sustainability at its core.

Theses two methods are designed to question the why in the site of choice. Each will analyse and output data to the answer if a block can be transformed into a sustainable community.

This is a rough abstract outline. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Updated Project Outline

Project:
Determine the best solution to create a sustainable community in a block of Vancouver.

Methods:
1. Gather information from different types of sources, on sustainability, with regards to the issues and problems relating to large population city designs.

2. Research information on planning and design of sustainability that accommodated expansion.

3. Apply the knowledge that I have gained and design a report that will inform individuals on how to implement a solution that will help create sustainable communities in British Columbia.

Special Problems:
1. Can designs for one part of British Columbia be applied elsewhere in the province?

2. What are the problems that occur from sustainability in large populated areas?

3. How the report should addresses these problems.

Also:
1. Should we consider expansion of the city, in case population exceeds projections?

2. Who’s going to be the primary reader of the report? How much designing and planning background does he/she have?

3. Since there are many ways to design city blocks, I will be looking to apply methods that are towards sustainability.
