Updated Project Outline

Project:
Determine the best solution to create a sustainable community in a block of Vancouver.

Methods:
1. Gather information from different types of sources, on sustainability, with regards to the issues and problems relating to large population city designs.

2. Research information on planning and design of sustainability that accommodated expansion.

3. Apply the knowledge that I have gained and design a report that will inform individuals on how to implement a solution that will help create sustainable communities in British Columbia.

Special Problems:
1. Can designs for one part of British Columbia be applied elsewhere in the province?

2. What are the problems that occur from sustainability in large populated areas?

3. How the report should addresses these problems.

Also:
1. Should we consider expansion of the city, in case population exceeds projections?

2. Who’s going to be the primary reader of the report? How much designing and planning background does he/she have?

3. Since there are many ways to design city blocks, I will be looking to apply methods that are towards sustainability.

  1. Hey Pat,

I definitely think you should look at the Olympic Village project in Vancouver. It's a great example of an attempt at a sustainable community, and the fact that it's all going up at once from scratch makes it an interesting case study.

I worked on this project at IBI/HB over the summer, so I can put you in contact with the architect working on one of the buildings if you like. He should be able to give you some information himself or refer you to someone responsible for planning the site.

As well, I may be able to get permission to show you some of the site and context drawings from the building I worked on. It was designed for LEED Gold Certification, so it has a lot features that you might find relevant.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll see what I can get for you.

  2. Hey Patrick,
I found a government document at the library that could be helpful. It's called Vancouver Downtown Eastside Redevelopment Planning. It's by Byron King Plant. Check it out hopefully it can be used to go with the Olympic Village idea. I think it has useful information for you.

  4. Hey Pat

I posted this on Jordans blog, but I'd suggest it to you too:

"Remember the development that David showed us the other day in 240. I swear that it was on the SFU campus, but no matter how much I look I can't find it.

Maybe you could ask David where it was exactly that this development was. He hasn't posted that classes powerpoint to WebCT yet. He said that they won tons of sustainability awards.

It might be useful to take a closer look at what they did and apply it to your project."

  5. I was looking through the library and came across this: http://site.ebrary.com.ezproxy.tru.ca/lib/trulibrary/docDetail.action?docID=10087670

It's a book about "a framework for strategic planing toward ecological sustainability". There's a number of books about "The Natural Step".

Sounds like something that might interest you.

  10. Hey Pat,
I found a book on sustainability that deals specifically with greater Vancouver. This looks like it could be very useful for your topic.
